Lost in Transition: The Dark Side of Emerging Adulthood

Lost in Transition: The Dark Side of Emerging Adulthood

Life for emerging adults is vastly different today than it was for their counterparts even a generation ago. Young people are waiting longer to marry, to have children, and to choose a career direction. As a result, they enjoy more freedom, opportunities, and personal growth than ever before. But the transition to adulthood is also more complex, disjointed, and confusing.

In Lost in Transition, Christian Smith and his collaborators draw on 230 in-depth interviews with a broad cross-section of emerging adults (ages 18-23) to investigate the difficulties young people face today, the underlying causes of those difficulties, and the consequences both for individuals and for American society as a whole. Rampant consumer capitalism, ongoing failures in education, hyper-individualism, postmodernist moral relativism, and other aspects of American culture are all contributing to the chaotic terrain that emerging adults must cross. Smith identifies five major problems facing very many young people today: confused moral reasoning, routine intoxication, materialistic life goals, regrettable sexual experiences, and disengagement from civic and political life. The trouble does not lie only with the emerging adults or their poor individual decisions but has much deeper roots in mainstream American culture--a culture which emerging adults have largely inherited rather than created. Older adults, Smith argues, must recognize that much of the responsibility for the pain and confusion young people face lies with them. Rejecting both sky-is-falling alarmism on the one hand and complacent disregard on the other, Smith suggests the need for what he calls "realistic concern"--and a reconsideration of our cultural priorities and practices--that will help emerging adults more skillfully engage unique challenges they face.

Even-handed, engagingly written, and based on comprehensive research, Lost in Transition brings much needed attention to the darker side of the transition to adulthood.

BBC Bang - Transition
If you bend over in the great Australian Outback and reach towards the ground you will most likely be running your fingers through fine grains of red sand. The act of passing from one state or place to the next is the definition of transition and it helps explain the origins of the sand as simply an erosive process. In this photo you can see the early stages of that sand you might have picked up. It is a large sandstone escarpment that is rather quickly turning into rubble and eventually will transition into sand.

To elaborate on Rainbow Valley...

Rainbow Valley is located about 75 km south of Alice Springs along the Stuart Hwy, and about 22 km east of the highway along a dirt road with some sandy patches. It normally can be reached in a conventional vehicle with care, but in wet weather Rainbow Valley is only accessible by 4WD. Open all year round, the cooler months from April to September are the most pleasant time to visit as temperatures in the valley commonly rise above 50°C in summer.

The main features of the Rainbow Valley Conservation Reserve are its spectacular red sandstone bluffs and cliffs. These free standing cliffs form part of the James Range, and are particularly attractive in the early morning and late afternoon when rainbow-like bands of differently coloured rock are highlighted. These bands in the sandstone cliffs are caused by water. In an earlier and wetter age, the red iron of the sandstone layers was dissolved and drawn to the surface during the dry season. These red minerals formed a dark iron surface layer with the leached white layers remaining below. The dark red capping is harder and weathers more slowly than the softer white sandstone below, which quickly turns into loose sand. Weathering and erosion are also responsible for the shape of Rainbow Valley, where sandstone blocks have been eroded into rock faces and squared towers.

There are some excellent stands of the majestic Desert Oak along the road into Rainbow Valley. Once at the valley, a walk along the base of the cliffs reveals great chunks of fallen rock, some of them weathered and pockmarked like coral, while a vast natural amphitheatre reverberates with the cry of birds and the sound of the wind whistling through Desert Oaks. On the rare occasions when Rainbow Valley is filled with rain, the large clay pan provides a mirror-like reflection of the multi-coloured ridge behind. A 40 minute return walk leads to Mushroom Rock, an unusual rock formation with a natural tunnel formed by millions of years of wind and rain erosion.

There are basic camping facilities at Rainbow Valley, however it is advisable to carry your own firewood and water.

The Transition Timeline: For a Local, Resilient Future

The Transition Timeline lightens the fear of our uncertain future, providing a map of

what we are facing and the different pathways available to us. It describes four possible scenarios for the UK and world over the next twenty years, ranging from Denial, in which we reap the consequences of failing to acknowledge and respond to our environmental challenges, to the Transition Vision, in which we shift our cultural assumptions to fit our circumstances and move into a more fulfilling, lower energy world.
The practical, realistic details of this Transition Vision are examined in depth, covering key areas such as food, energy, demographics, transport and healthcare, and they provide a sense of context for communities working towards a thriving future. The book also provides a detailed and accessible update on climate change and peak oil and the interactions between them, including their impacts in the UK, present and future.
Use it. Choose your path, and then make that future real with your actions, individually and with your community. As Rob Hopkins outlines in his foreword, there is a rapidly spreading movement addressing these challenges, and it needs you.
