Happiness is a Warm Pillow; Dot is Promoted!





Cats can sleep almost anywhere, as this photo of Dot using the edge of my external hard drive as a pillow demonstrates. But, you see, the hard drive is deliciously warm and it vibrates softly, factors I'm sure make it irresistible to Dot. For the record, there are as many actual cat beds as there are bunks on Salvation II, not to mention an abundance of fleece vests and soft pillows lying about. It's not as if we force Dot to sleep on metal surfaces.

Dot's Promotion
Well, I can announce that the Salvation II's personnel committee has met, and after due deliberation and motions made, seconded, debated, amended, seconded, and unanimously approved, Dot is now Salvation II's official Ship's Cat. Currently, on the advice of counsel, we're not going to address the Jones Act (46 U.S.C.) implications of this addition to roster of ship's officers.

No longer will Dot suffer the indignity of being referred to as the Interim Acting Ship's Cat.

You see, our sweet Lucy, who passed away just before we left port this April, had long held the position of Ship's Cat because of her seniority and unflappable character when the boat was underway. Fair weather or foul, Lucy could usually be found keeping us company in the pilot house, tucked into her corner between a big, protective pillow and the aft wall, which had delicious radiant heat from the exhaust stack. The sound of the engine-oil alarm held no terror for sweet old Lucy.

Dot, not so much. Dot loved to socialize with us, look at the scenery, and run around the boat when we were docked or anchored, but the moment Dot heard the skipper starting to prepare to fire the engine, she'd disappear into her personal cat suite in her carrier in the forward stateroom, not to be seen again until the skipper reduced the RPMs in preparation for docking or anchoring.

What clinched it for Dot was her decision to begin spend the afternoons with us in the pilot house while we were underway instead of staying sequestered in her little cat-carrier suite in the forward stateroom.

I suspect that warmer weather and warm sun on the carpet next to the screened pilot house door might have had something to do with Dot's sea change. Lucy's absence probably played a big role. Whenever Dot would show up in the pilot house while Lucy was there, Lucy would assume the attitude and aspect of a cranky old owl.

Other factors in favor of Dot's promotion were that she didn't get up - or even move muscle - when the ship recently went through a period of rolling while Dot was snoozing on the carpet.

Finally, over the weekend Dot showed she can explore a cool engine room (definitely not something we'd ever encourage) and emerge on her own, clean as a whistle and without having gotten stuck in one of the many traps for the unwary that abound in that holy place.

It's really hard to get a cat to wear insignia, and I don't want to put a collar on her, so the only way we'll know she's Salvation II's official ship's cat is by the bounce in her step and the look of pride in her eyes. Of course, that could also mean she's once again rousted me from my nap to play her special feather-toy game and lay out her daily treats, which are actually a form of dental care in a tasty fish flavor cats can't resist.
